FERPA and Virtual Learning

I write to you as our educational partners – students, parents, teachers and other school officials, and educational agencies and institutions – to share some resources as our K-12 schools and institutions of postsecondary education are moving to virtual learning during this time of social distancing due to COVID-19. The Student Privacy Policy Office (SPPO) has received questions about available resources on virtual learning and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). We have posted the attached FERPA and FERPA and Virtual Learning Related Resources, available on our website that may be helpful at this time.

Please direct any additional student privacy questions to SPPO by email at FERPA@ed.gov.

Please find attached the FERPA and Virtual Learning Webinar Presentation, from March 30, 2020.

Be well.
With best regards,
Kala Shah Surprenant,
Acting Director
Student Privacy Policy Office
